The searchable and sortable chart below captures how each city* in our survey measures up. We’ll be updating our findings periodically as police departments work to upgrade their scores and new cities contact us to have their manuals evaluated. The date of last revision can be found at the bottom of the chart.
*Our survey examined the 200 largest U.S. cities, based on the 2018 U.S. Census population, with a standalone police department. Four cities–Santa Clarita, Moreno Valley, Lancaster and Palmdale, all in California–rely on contracts with their county Sheriff’s Department to provide policing services. These cities appear in our chart to indicate their relative placement in population size, but were excluded from our analysis. Six cities included in our survey (Charlotte, Augusta, Nashville, Macon, Louisville and Lexington) have standalone police departments that also serve the surrounding county. Comparative population size for these cities was determined based on U.S. Census designations, using city-county data for consolidated governments when appropriate.
